Giant Pandas

An adult giant panda's fore paw is about 18 to 21 cm long. How big is your hand?

With their roly-poly bodies, thick black and white fur and the distinct black circles around their eyes, giant pandas are instantly recognisable to people young and old the world over.

When fully grown, Kai Kai and Jia Jia can weigh as much as 100kg and stand as tall as 1.6m. Despite their large size, giant pandas are agile tree climbers and efficient swimmers.

Kai Kai and Jia Jia sleep half of the day and stay awake half of the night. And, unlike their bear cousins, they do not hibernate.

Take some time to observe Kai Kai and Jia Jia and you'll notice that giant pandas are the only bears with "thumbs". This sixth digit on their paw is really an enlarged and elongated wrist bone, covered by a fleshy pad. This helps them to use it like a dexterous thumb to grasp food like bamboo shoots - the same way we use our thumb and finger to pick up things.
